The flood corridor at a glance

The river towns sit low. Manville is at the junction of the Raritan and the Millstone, and Bound Brook and South Bound Brook face each other across the Raritan downstream. Somerville and Raritan borough sit just north, near the North Branch. When those rivers crest, groundwater in the surrounding neighborhoods stays high for days, which is when basements take on water from below.

Bridgewater, Hillsborough and Franklin cover much more ground, with brooks, the Millstone and newer subdivisions. Basement trouble there is more often a single crack, a window well or a damp crawl space than a whole wall weeping.
